The Bernina Express — UNESCO World Heritage Site
Just 20 km from Chiuro, the Tirano station is the starting point of the famous Bernina Red Train, one of the most spectacular railway routes in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
The Rhaetian Railway's red train passes through breathtaking landscapes: from the terraced vineyards of Valtellina to the glaciers of the Bernina Pass (2,253 m), passing the famous Brusio spiral viaduct, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire route reaches St. Moritz in Switzerland, but partial sections to Poschiavo or Ospizio Bernina also offer unforgettable views.
The Little Red Train operates year-round: in summer among alpine flowers and glacial lakes, in winter among snow and snow-covered forests. The Wine Hotel San Carlo is the ideal base for a day trip: from Chiuro to Tirano, it's just a 20-minute drive.
Tip: Book your seat in advance during the summer months and choose a seat on the right-hand side of the train heading towards Switzerland to enjoy the best views of the Brusio Viaduct.

Skiing and Mountains in Valtellina — Bormio, Livigno, Aprica
Valtellina is one of the most comprehensive ski areas in Italy. From the Wine Hotel San Carlo di Chiuro, the main resorts can be reached in less than an hour:
• Bormio (40 km, ~40 min) — Olympic-sized slopes on 50 km of slopes, home to the Alpine Skiing World Cup. The famous Bormio Spa completes the experience with natural thermal baths with 2,000 years of history.
• Livigno (60 km, ~55 min) — Duty-free zone, 115 km of slopes between 1,816 and 2,797 m. Ideal for families and snowboarders.
• Aprica (35 km, ~35 min) — Family-friendly resort, 50 km of slopes between 1,181 and 2,082 m, excellent for beginners and children.
• Madesimo (80 km, ~1h10) — 60 km of slopes, famous for the Canalone slope with a 1,000 m difference in altitude.
Even non-skiers will find plenty to do: snowshoeing in the woods, ice skating, a spa, and Valtellina wine tastings by the fireplace. Returning to the hotel after a day on the slopes, our panoramic rooftop hydromassage pool offers the most scenic muscle recovery in Valtellina.
Wine Tourism: The Nebbiolo Wines of Valtellina
Chiuro is located in the heart of the Strada del Vino della Valtellina, among the heroic terraced vineyards where the Nebbiolo — here called Chiavennasca — produces some of Italy's most important reds.
The five DOCG sub-zones of Valtellina Superiore literally surround the hotel:
• Sassella — the most elegant, with floral notes and great longevity
• Grumello — structured and spicy, ideal with Valtellina dishes
• Inferno — intense and concentrated, produced on the warmest exposures
• Valgella — fruity and drinkable, the most accessible when young
• Maroggia — small sub-zone, rarity for connoisseurs
Added to these is the Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, the great dry passito made from dried grapes, among the most powerful and complex red wines in Italy.

Valtellina in Summer: Trekking, Cycling, and Nature
Spring and summer transform Valtellina into a green paradise. The terraced vineyards fill with vegetation, streams rush down from the Alps, and trails open up amidst alpine flowers and sweeping views.
Trekking and excursions: the Sentiero Valtellina runs along the entire valley for 200 km, with sections suitable for all levels of experience. From Chiuro, there is easy access to the trails through the terraced vineyards and to the high altitudes of the Valmalenco, with its glacial lakes and views of Mount Disgrazia (3,678 m).
Cycling: The Valtellina Cycle Route runs parallel to the Adda River for dozens of kilometers, passing through villages, historic bridges, and vineyards. Perfect for mountain bikes and road bikes.
Autumn — the Nebbiolo harvest: September and October bring the heroic harvest to the terraces. A unique experience: the harvesters climb by hand between the steep rows with baskets on their shoulders, as was done centuries ago. Some local producers welcome visitors during this period.
